Barefoot Lake District Challenge for the MS Society

Matt Scott – end of the 10 in 10

The 10 in 10 is an annual Lake District Challenge consisting of completing 10 Lake District Peaks in 10 hours, money raised for the event is in aid of the MS Society.

This year I stupidly decided to complete the challenge Barefoot, having only done a maximum of 6 miles of barefoot hiking previously I was a bit apprehensive.

Bit of a brief run through:

Set off at 0730, we headed up the first hill ‘Causey Pike’ which was a good push but not too bad.

Pushed through to Buttermere, 7 mile in and got there in under 4 hours, getting in the first 5 peaks and spirits were high.

One thing about going barefoot is that I can go uphill fairly fast and easily but the rocky descents really slow me down so after Buttermere on the pull up to High Snockrigg I ended up ahead of the team and didn’t see them again until the last peak Maiden Moor. I did get to soothe my feet in cold water at a tarn and a river along that route.

It was amazing re-uniting with the team at the last peak and then the walk down from there to the road got really hard as it was decent on sharp gravel and then onto the road which was really rough. Had to go mind over matter to get that last bit in.

Got to meet the organisers and then chill out at the end. Got back to the car barefooted which was a bit of a walk but I had it in my head that it had to be barefoot from car to car.
